Feel Bad About Your Desk?
Have a look at mine. I don't know how I get anything done, either. Yours is probably far less cluttered, but if it's not, don't worry: I'm proof that one can get things done in this kind of environment.

A fulltime writer for the past 28 years, I've written several dozen books, among them On the Way to the Web; Blogging Heroes;, the New York Times bestseller Crosley; Before Oprah: Ruth Lyons, the Woman Who Created Talk TV; and a few science fiction novels.
Forthcoming are a tell-all about Internet "interaction," a biography of Earl Muntz (who invented auto stereo), and computing titles.
I've done quite a bit of editing, including acquisitions for Baen Books and serving as Associate Editor or New Destinies.

It's like "coffee circle filing" -- the most important documents are always in the top layers or have the most coffee rings on them.
Ha! "Coffee circle filing." I like that, have to remember it. In my case it's tea.
I get into trouble when I want to get something of lower priority; I have to dig and move stuff, which knocks the important stuff off the top.
