Writing is Like Prostitution?

There's an old saying that makes the rounds from time to time. It goes like this: "Writing is like prostitution: First you do it for fun, then you do it for a few friends, and then you do it for money."

That's pretty much true--and both writing and prostitution can be creative.

But there is one way in which writing is definitely not like prostitution: Prostitutes don't do it for free!

You are SO right and that's why from the first day I started marketing manuscripts I never submitted to nonpaying markets. It wasn't until about 15 years later that I submitted to my first a nonpaying market (after many sales) and that was because I had a story that was slanted so tightly that I knew it couldn't sell to a paying market and it was such a fun story to write (and read, I hope) that I wanted it to have an audience. Never put your work out there for free without a good reason.
